Representation in Music Videos: Voyeurism

The term "representation" refers to a particular description or portrayal of someone or something. Sexual orientation, age, gender, and ethnicity may all be represented in music videos. The fundamental premise is how we observe people acting for a target audience in music videos.

Voyeurism - The practise of observing someone engage in sexual activity is known as voyeurism. Behaviours such as dancing, getting undressed, or having sexual relations to obtain
pleasure. When it comes to music videos, the person being watched is frequently unconscious of their audience, and it is typically a man's domineering gaze toward women that has been sexually objectified. According to Goodwin, camera work and editing with fragmented body shots that emphasise a sexualized treatment of the performance cause female performers to be sexually objectified. There are numerous obvious instances of voyeurism in many music videos, some of which I have used in the following slides, to assist market a product and pique viewer curiosity. Some of the examples of voyeurism are:

Arctic Monkeys - Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High
This music video exhibits voyeurism by showing sexual activity in a public setting. The music video depicted obscene situations with both men and women's naked bodies in addition to multiple sexual activities occurring at various locations throughout.

Marina and the Diamonds - How to be a Heart Breaker
A good illustration of light voyeurism is How to be a HeartBreaker. Although there are no overtly sexual scenes, the models who are half (or virtually) naked have certainly been added to the music video for voyeuristic reasons. Nevertheless, Marina scarcely engages the models in the song video, which lessens its voyeuristic elements. And it's clear that teenage and young adult girls—or even boys who don't mind—are the intended audience for this music video.

Beyonce - Dance for You
Beyonce is seen in this video dancing provocatively for a male, it exhibits voyeurism. And because of how she is dressed and the fact that she is participating in what is often a private and intimate encounter, this is voyeurism.

Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball
In the sexually and societally provocative video that suggests oral sex, Miley Cyrus licks a hammer. The Object sexualityin the video includes a massive wrecking ball that alludes to some sort of sexual activity.
